The extreme stresses to which dam blocks are subjected when opening and closing the belt during a rotation require high strength and hardness to prevent premature mechanical wear.


At the same time, the material must have good thermal conductivity for high-speed casting applications, and must not be sensitive to the formation of thermal shock cracks.
